What StroopTaal does
StroopTaal teaches the Dutch of daily life, work and the exams, from complete beginner to C1. The lessons, the words and the situations you practise follow life in the Netherlands.
Lessons from A0 to C1
Each level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) is a path of short lessons that you follow in order. You choose and type answers, put words in order, fill gaps, listen, write down what you hear, spot mistakes and speak, and after each answer you see why it is right or wrong. Grammar is part of the lessons, with tips, examples and conjugation tables, and each unit ends with a conversation from daily life.
Words and reviews
Words and past mistakes come back in short reviews, spaced out so that they return just as they start to fade. The Words tab has a dictionary, a word of the day, flashcards, a game for learning which article goes with a noun, and word puzzles. You can save any word you look up or hear and practise it later, and with Premium you can photograph a letter, a sign or a menu and save the words in it.
Listening
Lessons have listening exercises and dictation. Listening scenes play real situations such as a phone call, an announcement or a conversation at a counter: you answer questions about what you heard, save new words and then act out the situation yourself. Podcasts come with a transcript that follows the audio, and you can tap any word to see what it means. Some scenes and episodes are free; Premium opens the rest.
Speaking with Taalmaatje
Taalmaatje is the app's AI conversation partner. You call it and speak Dutch out loud, about everyday topics or a situation you want to practise, such as a visit to the doctor or a job interview, and you can read the conversation back afterwards. It is software, not a person, and says so before you start. Pronunciation practice scores a word or a sentence you say and tells you what to improve. Both come with Premium, which includes conversation time every day.
Writing
Lessons have typing and dictation exercises. With Premium, Sentence Check corrects the sentences you write and explains why, and exam practice gives AI feedback on your writing.
Exam practice
Practice for the inburgering exam at A2 and B1, with reading, writing, listening, speaking and KNM (knowledge of Dutch society), and for the Staatsexamen NT2 at B1 (Programma I) and B2 (Programma II). You practise each part of the exam on its own, with a timer. The app grades your writing and speaking with AI, keeps your results and shows a readiness score for each part. It is practice part by part, not a full mock exam, and it comes with Premium.
Progress and motivation
You choose a daily goal of 5 to 30 minutes and the time of a daily reminder. Your streak counts the days in a row on which you practise, and a streak freeze covers a day you miss. The stroopwafels 🧇 you earn with lessons, reviews and conversations decide your place in the league, by week, by month and of all time; unless you join it under a name you choose, you appear anonymously. When you finish every lesson of a level, you get a certificate with a link anyone can use to check it; it records your work in the app and is not an official language certificate. Every Monday the app sums up your week, and Premium adds a detailed report that AI writes from your own progress.
Phone, tablet and watch
iPhone and iPad with iOS 18 or later, and Android phones and tablets with Android 8.0 or later, both with home-screen widgets, and an Apple Watch app for quick word practice. You sign in with Apple, Google or your email address, and your progress follows your account to another device. There is no web or computer version, and the app needs an internet connection.
